Thabo Makgoale

Thabo is a fifth-year PhD student in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences advised by Dr. Sylvia Sullivan. His research focuses on the role of ice microphysics and precipitation processes within tropical mesoscale convective systems using storm-resolving climate simulations and satellite observations. His work seeks to improve understanding of how storms convert atmospheric moisture into rainfall, with implications for weather prediction, water resource management, and climate adaptation in vulnerable regions. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, Thabo worked as a climate scientist at the South African Weather Service, where he specialized in climate change and variability. 

Thabo earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (2012) and an Honours degree in Atmospheric Science (2013) from the University of Cape Town through the Climate System Analysis Group. He later completed a Master’s degree in Geography and Environmental Management at the North-West University in 2021. Through the Carson Scholars Program, he hopes to further strengthen his science communication skills and develop accessible ways to connect climate science with real-world societal needs.
