Diana Khaziakhmetova (she/her) is a third-year PhD Candidate in the School of Geography, Development & Environment, with a minor in American Indian Studies. Originally from Kazan, Russia, she is of Tatar, Udmurt, Russian, and Ukrainian heritage. Diana earned her Bachelor’s degree in Law and a Master's degree in Urban Planning from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, followed by a second Master's in Geography from George Washington University in Washington, DC. Her research focuses on how Indigenous communities in Fairbanks, Alaska, exercise sovereignty and reshape urban space through placemaking practices such as place naming, public art, and cultural programming. Diana enjoys reading, yoga, visiting museums and bookshops, hiking, and traveling in her spare time.
